Spelling List Unit 1 Review
We have reached the end of Unit 1 in our Spelling and Reading; therefore, this week will be a review of Unit 1.
Below is the link to the spelling words
for next week's test on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18. No school on Friday, September
19. Be on the lookout for a post on
BONUS WORDS on Monday, September 15!
There will also be 4 dictation
sentences this week due to it being a review. They, like last week, will be
taken for a separate grade. Please help your student work on spacing between
words in a sentence. I have been talking to them individually this week about
putting a "finger" space between words if I notice they are trying to
cram words together. The purpose of dictation sentences is not only to see if
they can spell words correctly but a lot of it is to see if they can properly
construct the sentence (i.e., spacing, capitalization, punctuation, etc.).

BONUS OPPORTUNITY
I am offering this week 5 bonus words on their spelling test. I
will be doing this at least once a month. I will be sending them out via
e-mail, the blog and remind 101. They will be worth 1 point each. It will be a
mixture of religion words and words that I feel are necessary for them to know
that are not apart of our spelling units.
This week's words are:
1. baptism
2. sacrament
3. September
4. Jesus
5. autumn
The plan for these words are not only to be an incentive for
extra points on spelling tests but also to extend their spelling knowledge,
especially for religion.
In His footsteps,
Mrs. Duke

Two-for-One!
I cannot express how thankful I am for such amazing 2nd
graders! We had an amazing time at the Botanical Gardens in Huntsville. Not
only did we get to enjoy the Alice in Wonderland display, but we got a free
sneak peek at the Scarecrow exhibit that starts September 1! The trip was
enjoyed by ALL!
My favorite part, as a teacher, was to watch the extreme
patience of our students in the butterfly house…waiting for
the perfect butterfly to land on their shoulders, hands, etc. Then they all
became concerned when a box turtle got his foot stuck inside another box turtle’s
shell. They immediately rushed over to me to see if I could perform on the spot
veterinary skills in turtle leg removal (to which I have none unfortunately).
PRECIOUS…is the only
word to describe that moment.
I have placed just a few of the pictures below from our
memorable trip. I am looking forward to another adventure soon with these
amazing young individuals!
Love,
Mrs. Duke J

Reading Study Guide Unit 1 Week 1
Today your child is bringing home the study guide for this week's Reading Comprehension Assessment. They also are bringing home their reading books. Please be sure to re-read this week's selections starting on page 13 - 35. The students will also be having a Fluency Assessment each week that is a random selection, but it contains the main vocabulary words that were covered in the corresponding week's selection. Re-reading the selections from the book will help your child become a more fluent reader.

This afternoon in your child's binder you will find our first Scholastic Book Orders. For those unfamiliar with Scholastic, it
is a book ordering company exclusively for school settings. The best part of

for your child’s classroom with each purchase you make. I would LOVE to
continue to expand our classroom library to offer a WIDE range of interests and
levels.
Please have any orders turned in by AUGUST 20. Please make all checks out to SCHOLASTIC.

Such a Gentleman
Dear Parents,
After realizing that this is the first year that the boys are required to wear a belt and have their shirts tucked in at all times while in uniform dress, Ms. Nolen and I came to an agreement that it would be great to have someone come and help the boys understand the proper belt procedures. Therefore on Friday, August 9, Mr. Bowling (father of Brenon Bowling in 1st grade) will be coming to help our boys with learning the "new" ropes of using a belt properly on their clothing. Mr. Bowling is YP1 trained and has had background in the military where proper and clean appearance is always expected. I just wanted to make you aware of this upcoming event FOR BOYS ONLY!
Thank you,

I
cannot express to you and your students how EXCITED I am to be returning to the
classroom in only 2 more school days!! I have missed everyone immensely! I am
glad to be getting back into the routine but most importantly back to what God
has called me to be...a teacher!
I
also wanted to let you know, even though it is NOT Tuesday, your child has
received his/her graded papers folder today. Please EMPTY the papers on the
"Leave at Home" side and return the stapled papers on the "Bring
Right Back" side. If your child returns his/her folder by Friday, s/he

Week of January 20 - 24, 2014
Good Tuesday Morning!
I
have to admit I am counting down the days until I get to return back to my
"home" at Saint Ann with all of my family! (14 school days) I have
missed everyone so much, but the Lord has clearly shown me that my body still
needs time to heal from 3 surgeries and 1 bacteria infection. Please pray that
my body can completely heal and I regain my strength by my return on February
10! For I surely miss all of the kiddos!
As
for now, the energized and exuberant Ms. Loyd will be taking my place for the
remainder of my absence. She and I had the great opportunity to meet this
weekend; therefore, she and I are on the same page as far as curriculum,
testing, assignments, etc. However, if you have any questions feel free to
e-mail me. I will be checking it daily (2ndgrade@saintanndecatur.org).
In
the meantime, have a great week! I love all of you and appreciate you!
